News is information about events or happenings in a particular time or place, or about people. It has always been an important part of human society, and grew to prominence in the 20th century with the development of mass media such as television and radio. The internet has since increased the speed and spread of news.
News can be about anything that is new, interesting, or significant. It may also be about a famous person, their lives and activities, or their achievements. People are interested in their health, and so stories about traditional remedies, medical research, hospitals or clinics are often newsworthy. They are also interested in the environment, and so stories about that are often newsworthy. They are also interested about food, so a story about growing or eating good quality food is of interest to them. People are also very interested in sex, although they don’t often talk about it openly. Therefore, when they do see something about sex in the news, it is usually significant.
Not all events are newsworthy, however. Things that happen all the time, such as a man getting up and going to work on his bus, do not make news. Newsworthy events must be unusual or strange, and they must be about people. News is also usually brief, because most of it gets reported only moments after an event happens. News about people or places is arranged in order of importance, and so what is big news will be given most space in a bulletin or on the front page of a newspaper, and less well-known news will be placed lower down.
