Automobiles are an important part of the modern world. They play a very significant role in the transport of passengers and goods, hence providing a lifeline to humans. The branch of Engineering which deals with the manufacturing and technology of automobiles is known as Automobile engineering. Automobiles are classified on the basis of their engine type, number of wheels and vehicle structure. They are also classified as light motor vehicles (LMV), heavy motor vehicles (HMV) and special purpose vehicles.
LMV include cars, buses, taxis etc. HMV includes trucks, tempos etc. Light fuel vehicle includes Petrol, CNG and LPG vehicles. Heavy fuel vehicle includes Diesel vehicles. All these types of vehicles are classified as automobiles.
The word ‘automobile’ derives from the French auto- + mobile, meaning self-propelled vehicle. The first automobiles were powered by steam engines attached to wagons, which were able to travel fast, but they had a limited range and it was expensive and time-consuming to recharge them. The automobile era began in the late 1800s when gas-powered internal combustion engines became available. These were more reliable and affordable, but they still produced a large amount of pollution.
As the world has become increasingly crowded, having access to a car is a necessity for most people who want to get around quickly and easily. It allows people to visit friends and family, go shopping, take long road trips and do a lot more. People often have to choose between using public transportation and owning an automobile, but for many people, the latter is the best option.
