Team sport is a game that involves players from opposing teams and relies on the collaboration of all team members to achieve success. These types of sports often involve teams facilitating the movement of a ball or similar object in accordance with rules to score points, such as basketball, volleyball, rugby, cricket, baseball and hockey. However, some sports have a hybrid aspect that includes team and individual performances, such as synchronized swimming, doubles tennis and relay races.

There are many benefits of participating in team sports. One of the most obvious is that it teaches kids how to work as part of a group and support one another to achieve a common goal. It also helps them learn the importance of being a good sport and puts winning into perspective. As the Janssen Sports Leadership Center explains, this is important because being a sore loser can be detrimental to future athletic and academic pursuits.

Playing team sports also fosters communication skills, as they often require players to express their concerns, hopes and ideas with coaches and teammates. This is true whether it’s listening to a locker room pep talk, picking up on nonverbal cues from other players or simply discussing a strategy during a practice.

In addition, team athletes must develop endurance, strength and a range of sport-specific skills that can be executed accurately and rapidly during competition. This requires training that often includes high-intensity, short-burst exercises to promote speed and agility. They must also hone the ability to cope with post-exercise muscle soreness and injury.
